Green Day, Steve Earle, Utada and More

Utada is no newcomer. Her 1999 debut, "First Love," was one of Japan's biggest selling albums in history, and she's sold 52 million records. But "This Is The One" marks the 26-year-old's attempt to crack the US market. Recorded with superstar producers Stargate and Tricky (Britney Spears, Madonna, Mariah Carey), it features ten originals--all co-written by the bilingual singer. Her style and material aren't as overzealous as some Top 40 divas, yet tunes like "Come Back to Me" and "Apples and Cinnamon" prove deceptively catchy. And she gets bonus points for retro-fitting a Ryuichi Sakamoto classic for the oddball party-starter "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence -- FYI."
