this is her name written in Japanese, though you often see her first name, Hikaru, in katakana: ヒカル.

宇 means heaven, roof, house, eaves, or counter for buildings
多 means　frequent, many, much
田 means rice field, rice paddy
光 means light


about 田. In names I've heard it is more used as phonetical than actually use the meaning "rice field".

However, the above is only the kanji explanations. The name Utada in this case I don't think mean anything. Not even in Japan... It's just phonetical, as far as I know :o

Em,I think i know Utada meaning in chinese.

宇=words

多=many

田=sweet

I think so is the meaning in chinese.

I agree with ayehunny... the kanji explanations were quite accurate... except for 宇, i think should mean, universe...

I once heard that long time go Japanese name were given according to the place they live at, for example Yamashita 山下, which...

山 = mountain
下 = below or under

which means that... the kanji readings for Utada could be the place where Hikki's ancestors used to live at...

during her in the flesh tour there appears to be two groups of fans of hers. one group yells utada and one group yells hikki :D

i supposed most of the hikki ones are japanese tourists or know of her nickname lol

i think japanese name is hard to use other language to explain

...yes, that sounds like Hikki to me

i like hikki but i like utada more ^__^ . . idk thats just cuz its her real name and not a nickname . .
