'THE BREAK' - Utada Hikaru's Sabbatical

Posted by Q on 2010/8/9 8:06:55
So as announced on Hikki's blog (translation), and for what I am now coining/naming "THE BREAK"

Hikki will be taking a long term break from her music career.
She plans to go full-throttle with music activities till the end of this year(2010). [which should include new songs, new SINGLES COLLECTION VOL.2 album, and an Endorsement campaign]

After reminiscing on 12 years since she started with "Automatic" when she was 15 years old,
She feels she needs to concentrate more on "human-being activities" so that means less "music activities" to grow more as a person.

She says she has "no idea how long it is going to be - 2 years or 5 years, but I shall return, more matured. Give me some time."

ALSO ... its interesting that she signs her post
宇多田光
and not
宇多田ヒカル

...perhaps that is the "human" Hikaru signing

New theory:
Musician in Japan: "宇多田ヒカル"
Musician in America: "Utada"
Civilian: "宇多田光"

That's because she uses the kanji "光" as her first name. The kanji actually means "Hikari," or "Light" in english, but that's what she uses for her name "Hikaru" XD.

Yep, i know ...
...its just she is very particular about her language when it comes to things like song titles etc (eg. Distance vs. DISTANCE - one is the song, the other is the album)

So little things like how she writes her own name as well

I'm speechless. I'm very happy that Hikaru has decided to do more with her life. I agree with her that she should do other "activities" but...I guess the thought of not having Hikaru around kind of hurts? but it shouldn't right? afterall she did say she's not leaving us...but it's just...years without her...

Just think, just because she's on hiatus doesn't mean she's not going to write music while she's gone. It's a good thing she took a break on a good note, though (the success of In The Flesh). I'm more than positive she won't be gone for long. She'll want to share whatever she writes with as many people as possible.

Well, this was certainly a long time coming. I think I saw the first indications of this kind of decision towards the start of TITO promotions in the U.S.; lately, Utada has been pretty nostalgic what with ten+ years of her career behind her and I think she's at a perfect impasse to do this right now. She's just completed her obligation to IDJ, In The Flesh was apparently one of her dreams come true and she's been quiet enough for the past year that I don't think anyone should really be shocked by this news. Hikki has always said she would either retire early or take some time to do other things- I for one am extremely supportive of this choice. Rocketing to super stardom at the age she did doesn't do a whole lot of good for a person's identity development and I think if nothing else Hikki has struggled with that on a personal level for some time now. I'm encouraged by her guarantees that she will be back, so at least we know this isn't her call to retirement, and while I'm saddened that this year may be the last in several for Hikki material (at least, musically speaking ;]), I'm truly excited for it and I can't wait to see what Hikki will bring to the table after all this is said and done. Watching her grow and mature as an artist at the same time that I have grown and matured as a person has been one of the most fantastic aspects of being a fan: it's good to know she'll be keeping in touch during this next phase of her human journey. :3
