^To further top off what others here said, its a direct homage and inference from literary genius Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold Can Stay" poem and was inspired by Stevie Wonder's soundtrack song of the same name (though they feature totally different compositions and lyrics, that warm atmosphere is similar!); Its about staying young and innocent at heart as life and the world as you see it grows harder on you and more indifferent with age and decay. Its basically a downtempo optimism ballad, but there's several ways to interpret it, depending on when someone else tells you 'to stay gold' directly!....

Were you meaning the lyric translation?

Stay Gold - Utada Hikaru

I?ll always love you so
there?s no need for you to worry at all
My darling, stay gold
Keep smiling freely, forevermore

Within your eyes, a young boy still lurks
It tickles my instincts, and it won?t stop

Ah, somehow just like that, good luck

There will surely
be many more sad times ahead of us
My darling, stay gold
It?s also important to understand pain

I?ll always love you so
there?s no need for you to worry at all
My darling, stay gold
Keep smiling freely, forevermore

Now being employed, we can?t continue playing forever anymore
An adult?s common sense and wisdom, is also good to share with others

Ah, today, just leave it as it is?good night

It is said that a person?s heart
changing is normal
Hey darling, your soul
I?ll continue shining gently

I?ll always love you so
There?s no need for you to worry at all
My darling, stay gold
Keep smiling freely, forevermore

I?ll always love you so
There?s no need for you to worry at all
My darling, stay gold
If you can keep smiling freely til that day?

At a promo tour for TITO, a fan asked Utada what her specific inspiration was for the song. She talked about how she noticed a lot of fresh-faced right-out-of-college kids joining the management for her label. She said she hated to see these young kids get involved in the dirty world of business politics, and this song is her way of urging them to stay gold, or preserve their innocence. The title is taken from a very popular Robert Frost poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay".
In short, it is about staying young and innocent while the world goes bad.
