Yes I will be studying for an Accounting and Finance BSc at the LSE, the course is spread over 3 years however I have exemptions in a number of elements. Ok you are studying Economics and Statistic, and you are second year, it is a real shame that libraries have to close and budgets cut. What is the current employment situation in California for economics graduates? In the UK and especially London prospects for accountancy and economics graduates are still superb. When I was trying to figure out just what I was going to do with my life, I noticed that a number of professions seem to be immune to the prevailing economics tides, dentistry was one of my first choice, every time I visit the Dentist he is either going on holiday or come back from one, the delving onto mouths with handfuls of instruments, and thought of patients screaming at you are real showstoppers though, another profession is law, but having part time experience as a court runner which brought me into contact with some pretty unsavoury people, and noticing how stressed out some of the solicitors were, I chose accountancy, businesses will always require the service of accountants, either to tally up the profits, or to report on the losses, either way the accountants are always the first to be paid... So Accountancy won. Aijin I hope the situation improves for you soon ![]() |

Lol, to be honest... koko0830, i would like to go to University of California instead if i am given the chance, although i am actually studying in london now. The study environment and the system seems more appealing to me, haha. There is an exchange program offered but there is only one place, plus all the competition!!! I do agree on the rich history, its kinda eye opening travelling around europe.
Btw, most Universities start to cut cost due to the economy downturn by removing departmental libraries, cancel free humanity courses, which means no more free language courses... man, i was planning to study japanese in this fall!!! Congratz on your decision to accounting and getting into LSE, pips ![]() |

To be honest kuromaguro, I feel totally out of my depth, I achieved inclusion because the admissions resignation board suggested ?I did a good interview?, so now I have to return that confidence by producing results.
My family in Japan particularly expect me to do well. I am really worried that I am ultimately going to let people down. Koko has got through the first year and I have been advised that most students find the first year the most demanding. Did you find this correct Koko? Kuromaguro you can still study Japanese here in London, there is a number of international Colleges that specialise in Japanese literature, languages, modern culture and history, my cousins from Japan are in London attending the same institute, taking a foundation course for the International Baccalaureate. ![]() |

I've thought about dentistry as well but the profession seems too demanding and entering dentistry school would be competitive... At least in the US, there'll be a large demand for accountants within the next 5-10 years and the pay is decent..but at the Universities of California, none of the 9 campuses really offer such a specific major..the closest thing is managerial economics or business administration but I guess as an economics+stats major, I could always go into finance..that's why i chose those two majors..I'm actually thinking of transferring to another University of California (a more prestigious one) and I'm applying this fall... My friend went to the University of Southern California (USC) studied business, worked as an investment banker at Merill Lynch, then got fired... |

The Universities of California are named as the public ivys..hahaa! I only applied to them during the application process because they're like the more affordable type of schools with a higher quality of education and I didn't want to study out of state as the weather in cali is superb! Studying in the UK or anywhere else in Europe would be so insightful.. Are there community colleges where you could study languages? Coz in the states, students who choose not to go directly to a 4 yr university upon high school graduation attend those for 2 years and transfer to other schools, typically a University of California. And they usually get into better schools as community college courses are alot easier and thus, the higher GPA. I've taken Spanish at community college a few summers ago and I really enjoyed it! |

Is tuition insanely expensive at LSE? But I guess its worth it given how prestigious it is...lol But as long as you work hard, you'll do well and with where you'll graduate from, I'm sure you'll succeed. I feel like employers constantly recruit from top universities so when people tell you "where you go to college doesn't really matter but what you achieve when you're there is important", I feel like they're lying...That's the only reason why I'm thinking of transferring... I hear that junior year is the most demanding since you'll be taking your major courses (typically upper division) and I found the first year to be quite relaxed because you don't have to cook, live in a dorm, and you're still getting used to college life. I took alot of general education (GE) courses and lower division major courses during my first year although I did take 2 upper division courses spring quarter.. |

Yes the tuition fees are eye wateringly expensive, I have spent the last year working and saving up, so to lessen the burden of having to borrow. Mum and Dad have offered to pay, however with my Sister and Brother both looking towards higher education within the next 18 months, this will put even more pressure on, ?The Bank of Mum and Dad?, who have never asked me to contribute towards my board and lodgings whilst living at home, many of my friends have to pay for Student accommodation, and Caroline my study partner has to house share, which Caroline said is very stressful because the students sharers have never been properly house trained!! The debate about acceptance into the allegedly top universities, examples would be Oxford and Cambridge can be a red herring, major graduate employers have become explicitly focused on motivation, organisational fit, and competency. It is not uncommon to have a personality profile as a part of the initial application process and to be asked to provide very detailed examples of competencies such as ?teamwork? or ?problem solving?. Additionally, private sector employers like to see that applicants have some commercial awareness - an insight into how firms operate, what is happening in the business world and the impact this could have on their organisation, but most of all experience in one chosen field of expertise is invaluable, and will be recognised alongside higher educational achievement. Koko you have had to make lots of difficult decisions to keep ahead of the game, the investment banker at Merrill Lynch, a victim of organisational downsizing is disappointing to say the least, I hope that I can maintain your levels of motivation and focus...... |

The Japanese course used to be available in my university are offered free and not usually full time but can be taken into credit for your degree. I can't afford to go for language courses outside my uni, because studies in imperial college can't be taken lightly... and yeah, the tuition fee itself is absurdly expensive... so Pips, i guess u are paying the international fee?
I think "where you'd graduate from" does matter at the current economy state since employers hire less graduates now and in general they feel more secure to hire from somewhere with reputation. But in the end, the degree just secure a job for you, whether you'd stay there or get fired, it all depends on the individual's motivation and character as Pips pointed out. The first year is demanding in the sense that its a different kind of enviroment, so i think you just need to get used to it, keep up the momentum and you are good to go. Pips, I am sure you'll do fine, the selection doesn't just depends on the "good interview", they must've seen potential in you and you are more than enough to live up their expectation ![]() |

Free Wow....Great, but kuromaguro have you had to apply for a Student Grant, the whole UK Student loan system is in chaos as the new Student Loans Company struggles to deal with a record number of applications for grants and loans, which this year took over the processing of maintenance grants and tuition fee loans from local councils.
Caroline my study partner, is distraught, after applying well in advance, Caroline was informed that the delays are ongoing and out of the companies control, Caroline has been advised to obtain a loan from a High Street Bank which is ludicrous. Complains center around this company's phone and computer system, saying they are experiencing long waits and receiving conflicting information from administrative staff. This is the first year that student's tuition fee loans, maintenance grants and maintenance loans have been processed by one organisation, Student Finance England, run by the Student Loans Company (SLC). This Student Loans Company has said it is sorry some people are experiencing delays but insists any problems are related to the volume of calls to the helpline and are not due to any technical or systemic problems, which is patent nonsense, Caroline was told by Student Loans Company front office, the company had ?run out of financial resource?, which is evident by the conflicting advice encouraging Students to approach commercial Banks. I have had emails from friends studying at neighbouring Universities have similar issues with the same company!! ![]() |
