I agree with SimpleArtist94, I think she did it intentionally to fit the song. To me, at least, her voice sounds similar in Heart Station to a few of her older songs like For You.

I heard people say her voice was damaged since Utada United, which was like 2 hours of straight singing and running around. Talk about endurance! I notice her voice has gotten a bit lower from cd to cd.

I think her voice has weakend slightly,well she likes vinegar and she's allergic to cedar wood so she had to strain her voice a bit for UU06'.
The songs since Boku wa Kuma have become less intense than the songs on UB. Think she can still pull off those high-pitched tunes like in Movin on without you or Hikari? Nevertheless, her voice still has that 'Utadaness' that we all love so I'm not worried one bit...I just hope she takes careof those vocal chords of hers... |

I liked both Heart Station and Stay Gold, though the latter is my favorite of the two. Definitely Ultra Blue was (in my opinion at least) the pinnacle of her voice (especially in COLORS), and I don't think that it'll go shabby anytime soon (I hope not!!!).
