Strangely, I really like listening to Utada sing in Japanese, even though I hardly understand a word of it without subtitles. She is so pitch perfect, and the music is so good, that the language does not matter to me. In fact, it lends the songs an even more exotic or luxurious international "feel" just as it probably does to Japanese listeners, when she drops in a few English phrases or lyrics here and there. It would have been great to have some of her best Japanese works in English. First Love, Passion, Colors etc - but it seems as though she's never bothered to include them into Exodus or even released them as a single - which makes me sad.

I worry a bit - am I going to have a distaste for her next English album too? It's likely - it'll be marketed to the masses. I like Hikki's music because it is different and it appeals to me in ways that other artists do not.
