this is kind of funny...we're the only ones posting poems...come on people...

speaking of which, i just finished this one

CHEMISTRY

i?m on fire and i feel like
i?m melting in your presence,
your arms gentle around my
waist, caressing me as we dance,
head resting on my shoulder,
close enough to kiss me,
smile playing at my lips
because you?re so near; we?re
connected as if we were meant to be
and as we rock to the rhythm
i realize that everything is
fluid motion, making me feel
beautifully alive.

Yay! I'd love to read it once you get it down.

And, I mean...this can be a place where we talk about our favorite poems/poets too...doesn't have to be just people writing their own poems...

At any rate, this is really fun.

I personally don't like writing poems myself because it's just not natural to me. I feel like I'm forced to make the poem sound beautiful and use only specific words, otherwise it's not..."fit" to be a poem. Just not my character. :/

For the mostpart.. I agree with TiffyKitty.

I feel poetry has many confines. I often avoid poetry because of the constraints of predesignated limits on how things should be.

Such that, I tend to more towards prose.

I have ever appreciated the beauty of the written word. It shows in how I speak and how I write. I suppose it comes with reading much when I was younger - but to me, there is nothing more beautiful than well assembled words.

I remember this one offhandedly - from the Lord of the Rings:

"And long there he lay, an image of the splendour of the Kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world."

(I actually am not that big of a nerd.. I had to look it up)

I really enjoy beautiful verse.. but for the last few poems in this thread, they came by serendipity. I do not know of the name of the type - should a type even exist for them. But I noticed repeating words and phrases without even trying. And then I decided that this line should rhyme with this.. to bring it well together.

My most recent as of tonight:

How the heart yearns for the moment never to be;
If only in dream,
If only in thought,
Let it be forever embossed into charished memory.

Please! If only in dreams beneath the lonely silver moon,
Let it be an ode to joy,
Let it be a sonnet of bliss,
May it be that I ever remember its tune.

Prayers whispered to the towering dark,
May it be that they go unanswered?
May it be that words fell silenced upon deaf ears?
It be that these ungrateful years forever leave a cruel mark.

I know now that my heart will never be free;
It be the cold will of the world,
It be the disheartening truth,
How the heart yearns for the moment never to be.

When I was writing it, it was like, OMFG! Like, 1:1 rhymes with 1:4. When I got to 2, I was like, "OMFG! 2:2 and 2:3 both use the same start as 1:4!" When it came to the end, I decided to tie up 4:4 with the same line as the start (1:1) for a sense of completion.

So it was just serendipity. I didn't have to try all too hard.

*cocks gun*

So you guys had better give it a shot, lest I shoot first!

see...here's my thing. i used to think poetry was limited. that you could only put this here, or that there, that this had to rhyme...blah blah blah.
but then i started reading e. e. cummings. i mean, shoot. that man would throw a comma in the middle of a word, capitalize random things, and even more crazy stuff...but his poems still mean something to me. i started to deviate from structure too.

i mean, i'm mainly a free verse poet. every now and then, i'll write something that just so happens to have something that rhymes in it that i can run with...but it's hardly ever deliberate (which reminds me of the predeterminism v. free will topic). i've tried my hand at prose...but it's just...harder for me. things just come more naturally to me when they're in poem form...

and, lest we forget...all songs start as poems...as we celebrate hikki, we are celebrating the purest of poetic genius. ^^

ironically, my next is an extremely structured poem...a series of haiku. i know no japanese...i looked up the words for the title online...and technically the title's inverted because the k's sounded cool together.

AMAKE KITARU

Tonight, my darling,
your eyes were clouds of sorrow.
Now I fear the storm.

Yesterday, I dreamed
That you walked away from me
And said not a word.

Now I am awake
And I see my dream was real--
The tempest is here.

i find this appropriate as far as the subject of not being able to write poetry...sort of.
yes, i wrote a poem once about not being able to write a poem.

WRITER'S BLOCK

Tapping my pen
on the side of the desk,
staring at the page blankly.

My mind is
somewhere between
Wide-
and
College-Rule.

But where are the words?

I search for a song
to prove the truth.
One line rewinds in my head.

Will I ever really love you?
Will I ever really love you?

I still can't find the voice,
can't convey what it means.

The words, simple entities inside,
remain outside the margins.
