Blend Title: Exodus '04 Vs. Black President
Genre: Pop/Hip-Hop/Rap
Artists: Utada Hikaru & Nas Featuring Tupac Shakur
Albums Involved: Exodus (Utada, 2004), Nas (2008)
Mixer: Carlo (yours truly)
Comments: Hikki released Exodus right around the time that a senator from Illinois named Barack Hussein Obama electrified the Democratic National Convention with a speech. Fast forward four and a half years to the present, and he's the 44th President of the United States. In celebration of his inauguration on the 20th (I'm Filipino, not African-American, but I too regard his election as a good omen for our country!) I decided to see if I could mix some of Hikki's stuff with a pro-Obama song, and when I saw these two songs, I knew I had something to work with (if you look at it, in my opinion, Hikki could be speaking for a Japanese-American voter.) Pay attention to the track volume levels - both tracks get louder over time for a reason.

Lyrics

1st Verse - Utada
With you, these streets are heaven
Now home feels so foreign
They told me I was mistaken, infatuated
And I was afraid to trust my hunches
Now I am ready
Daddy, don't be mad that I'm leaving
Please let me worry about me
Mama, don't you worry about me
This is my story

1st Chorus - Utada
Through mountains high and valleys low
The ocean, through the desert, snow
We'll say goodbye to the friends we know
This is our Exodus '04
Through traffic jams in Tokyo
New music on the radio
We'll say goodbye to the world we know
This is our Exodus '04

2nd Verse - Utada
Landscapes keep changing
History teaches something
I know I could be mistaken, but my heart has spoken
And I cannot redirect my feelings
The waves have parted
Daddy, don't be mad that I'm leaving
Please let me worry about me
Mama, don't you worry about me
This is my story

2nd Chorus - Utada
Through mountains high and valleys low
The ocean, through the desert, snow
We'll say goodbye to the friends we know
This is our Exodus '04
Through traffic jams in Tokyo
New music on the radio
We'll say goodbye to the world we know
This is our Exodus '04

3rd Verse - Nas (with Utada)
I'm listening to a music neverending
My baby, don't you know I'll never let you down
You've opened me to so many different endings
But baby, I know that you'll always be around

What's the black Prez thinkin' on Election Night?
Is it "How can I protect my life, protect my wife, protect my rights?"
Every other president was nuttin' less than white
'Cept Thomas Jefferson and mixed Indian blood and Calvin Coolidge

KKK is like, "What the f***?!"
Loadin' their guns up
Loadin' up mines too, ready to ride
Cause I'm ridin' with my crew - he dies, we die too!

I'm listening to a music neverending
My baby, don't you know I'll never let you down
You've opened me to so many different endings
But baby, I know that you'll always be around

Yeah, but on the positive side
I think Obama provides hope and challenges minds
Of all races and colors to erase the hate
And try to love one another - so many political snakes
We in need of a break - I'm thinkin' I can trust this brother
But will he keep it way real?
Every innocent n***a in jail gets out on appeal?
When he wins, will he really care still? I feel...

3rd Chorus - (with Utada) & Tupac (with backup and also Obama in background)
Through mountains high and valleys low
The ocean, through the desert, snow
We'll say goodbye to the friends we know
This is our Exodus '04
Through traffic jams in Tokyo
New music on the radio
We'll say goodbye to the world we know
This is our Exodus '04

And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president
And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president
(Yes, we can change the world)
(Obama: "Change the world! They said...")

Through mountains high and valleys low
The ocean, through the desert, snow
We'll say goodbye to the friends we know
This is our Exodus '04
Through traffic jams in Tokyo
New music on the radio
We'll say goodbye to the world we know
This is our Exodus '04

And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president
And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president
(Yes, we can change the world)
(The world, the world, the world)

And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president
And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president
(Yes, we can change the world)
(Obama: "Change the world! They said...")

Traffic jams in Tokyo
New music on the radio

And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president
And though it seems heaven sent
We ain't ready to have a black president

Traffic jams in Tokyo
New music on the radio

(Yes, we can change the world)
(The world, the world, the world)
