Whenever someone says that an artist is "just like" Utada, I usually only take that with a grain of salt, because Utada is so versatile and unique nobody is really "just like" her.
I'd like to add ikimono-gakari and the brilliant green to my list. Can you tell I like female rockers? |

I find most J-pop grating to listen to. Why is it that you have to look to Enka to find the technically good singers? I don't get it. However, occasionally, there are some J-pop singers who really knock it out of the park. My faves are:
Angela Aki Ayaka 絢香 Ikimonogakari いきものがかり MISIA Dreams Come True Spitz スピッツ Kobukuro コブクロ Superfly Onitsuka Chihiro 鬼束ちひろ (wish she had better songs, she can wail) The following aren't the best singers, but they write good music, most of the time. Kimura Kaela 木村 カエラ Hirai Ken 平井堅 (I think of him as the male version of Utada) Chara Hamasaki Ayumi 浜崎あゆみ (her earlier stuff & remixes are more interesting) Every Little Thing (their 1st two albums only - the current stuff is horrible) |
