Will Vivendi take the plunge and look to divest its interests in the Universal Music Group, world music sales overall topped a record 1.5 billion units in 2009, a 2.1% rise at the point of retail year on year, however these 2009 figures reveal a 10 year fixed trend of ?digitals? up as ?physicals? down, at an alarming rate, a revenue drop close to 13%, the digital sales do not come close to compensating for the decline in physical sales, across the first Q, year on year sales comparisons, the margin is significant, blamed partly on variable iTunes pricing.....

The US combined "physicals" for sales ending April 2010 including the 10 equals 1 track equivalent album forecast, fell 7%, at these rates of decline Universal will need to reconcile their market position soon and explain how this gap can be bridged..... the 25 year 17 market fix spread the decline is an eye watering 49%, little wonder the European Parliament stressed to the Commission that the EU will loss more than a million jobs across the sector by 2015 if effective action is not taken to tackle piracy now....... How this will be achieved is another matter altogether...
