As I was looking thru the full running time off the tracks on .:hikki:.`s blog site I saw the song take 5. This song title has special importance to me because it is the same name as the jazz standard take 5. This was a wonderful song written in 5/4 time. Now My question is, has utada opened her range to jazz? Not just any jazz but musically complex jazz (utada usually does not do musically coplex songs), well as jazz is complex but you know what I mean...So is this song actually about taking a break (the expression take 5 means to take a 5 minute break, for those who don`t know), or is it a tribute to the great jazz song?

What is your opinion? I really hope it the jazz song.

P.S. tito puente re-arranged the song (take 5) in 4/4 and gave it a mambo make-over, pure brilliance!

I am sorry I should of went into a bit more detail, but I guess it does not matter, as this is not a popular thread anyways.

Well as I said before all jazz is complex. But there are forms of jazz which are more complex and some which are less complex. Take contemporary smooth jazz, it is , in my opinion, a simple version of jazz. I would say that big band is a simple version of jazz. I would say that most of the jazz standards, in their original form (meaning not rearranged by another person), are medium difficulty. I should say that some jazz standards are easy and some are hard, but on the whole they are of medium difficulty. And then you have the hard stuff like abstract jazz like avant garde jazz. That stuff is HARD, to both play and listen to. Well that type of music experiments in time signature, does ungodly chord structures, it is really fast alot of the times, and even if its in 4/4 there really is not a downbeat alot of the times, making it hard to feel the groove. And these people improvise to this music and do crazy stuff, that is like musican porn. I can not really understand it, because I am not a real musician. But my pops says that avant garde is music written for musicans to enjoy, not so that the average listener can enjoy. So it might not sound good to you and me, yet its breathtaking to musicans. I sould also note that nmot a lot of vocalists do avant garde, or I should correct my self and say I have never heard a vocalist in avant garde.

Now my original post was asking wheter or not hikki would attempt a jazz song that possessed some complexity (in comparison to jazz songs) for her first jazz song, or is the take 5 song unrelated to jazz.

Hikki attempted jazz once, and she changed it to R&B, that was fly me to the moon. Shiina ringo also did a version of the song, it was quite nice, maybe one of you guys will check out that version, it was a bit more jazzy. And also if you want to hear the original version of fly me to the moon, it is sung by good ole blue eyes, frank sinatra.

i think i get what you mean already. thanks for the info.

and if hikaru really does a jazzy song, complex or not, then lets hope it would be good. she loves experimenting with sounds so it would not be a surprise.
