Why does Hikki use boku in a lot of her songs? Like Traveling and Boku wa Kuma?

"Boku" is the masculine form of "I am" in Japanese. For example Boku wa Kuma = I am a Bear.

someone can correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't studied Japanese for the last 4 years so my memory is rusty...but even though we're taught that 'boku' is only used by males because its more masculine way of saying "I" or "me", a lot of kids just say boku because it's just what they learn first and what they pick up from listening to adults. So boku is generally accepted as used by kids, and can also be used in familiar settings like between friends even if you're a girl.

I think you can look at it as almost slang? That's just how I sort of see it.

Again, feel free to correct me on it! haha I'm just going by memory :)

nono....we are taught that only guys/boys/males/men use boku. I think the OP is confused because Utada, as female, uses boku when we're taught that only guys do.

Oh, and 'Boku' only stands for the 'I', the 'am' is actually the 'wa' in 'Boku wa Kuma'

seraphim is right by saying that "boku" is only used by men. It also means "I" or "Me"... Which is more of an informal way of saying... "Watashi" is the more formal way of saying "I", or "Me", whereas "Boku" is a more informal but polite way of say "I" or "Me". (The informal and proud way of saying "I" or "Me" is saying "Ore"). Like what seraphim said, informal speech is often used in familiar settings, like between friends.

Also Cats&Peaches mentioned the use of "Boku" is because Hikki is singing the song in the aspect of a male. Well, in some of her songs, she sang "Ore" too.

I wasn't too sure about that, but that was what my friend, who was familiar with Japanese, told me. I might not be 100% right...
