Utada did not steal anything. There's a term for when a singer-songwriter adapts another writer's music; it's called "sampling." Utada sampled Ryuichi Sakamoto's piano piece, known as "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence," for her own song. It's entirely legal so long as the proper royalties are paid to owner(s) of said music.

For that matter, Utada has sampled quite a bit of music in her time. "Amai Wana ~Paint It Black~" takes from The Rolling Stones's song, "Paint It Black." She even sampled music from her own song, "Hotel Lobby," in "Kiss & Cry."

This thread makes me laugh. She originally wanted to title the song FYI since it's the chorus and all, but one requirement for using the Ryuichi Sakamoto interpolation was that it be the title of the song.

Personally, I've had a mash-up of the original with the Utada track in the back of my mind for a while now. Hopefully I'll get to finishing it at some point.
