Thanks for sharing this. I remember reading about MCML being a movie that touched the subject of homophobia, but I didn't really think much of it until I read that article. Thanks a lot!

It may not seem like much to some. But the fact that Utada seems very supportive of gays, it makes me feel very comforted.

Yeah, Hikki has made it overwhelmingly apparent that she treats her gays well. <3

I love how this has created such a buzz in the fan community. I suspected Hikki had a lot of LGBTQ fans, much like Madonna, and I knew something would come of it following the San Fran tour date.

It's really wonderful that my favorite artist supports me on such a personal level- even without knowing me, by supporting gay equality Utada supports every gay out there in one way or another. Plus one voice to the growing call for equal recognition and fair treatment. :3

On a side note, I'm really sad I don't have one of those baseballs. I would put it in a glass case and keep it on a shelf somewhere, and when anyone asked me who I caught it from or at what game I'd say, "Utada, at 'In The Flesh 2010"," and they'd be like, "Wuuuuut I've never heard of that" and it'd be a perfect segue into introducing her. ;D

EDIT: Also, regarding that movie, it's really good, you guys should see it. David Bowie is amazing, and it does pretty clearly touch on the rift in society with LGBTQ peoples and how that road to self-discovery and acceptance can be both touching and destructive at once.

And don't forget to mention that one of Hikki's idols, Freddie Mercury (referenced in both "Animato" and "This One (Crying Like a Child)" as well as countless interviews), is well known for being openly homosexual.

I will definitely have to check out Mr. Lawrence, especially since I already am a pretty big fan of Bowie and own like, 8 of his albums, lol.

For me, it almost feels as if I have a supporter, even though I don't even personally know her, lol. A lot of her uplifting music helped me deal with a lot of depression and anger during the time I was still in the stages of realizing, and trying to accept the fact that I was gay. Even now I have my bad days, but I can always count on Utada to cheer me up. :)

Another Bowie lover! Yay! :D

That's one of the big reasons why it's so important that there are prominent figures out there standing in solidarity with gay people. The bigger the name the bigger the reach. Some LGBTQ people aren't as fortunate as I am, to have an accepting family and friends and a more or less tolerant immediate community. With strong public figures like Hikki and Madonna and even Lady GaGa (whose music I'm not a fan of, but that's beside the point) speaking in support of equality and love, those more isolated, "troubled" (for lack of a better word) gays don't have to feel so alone. Sure, it's not enough on its own, but it definitely doesn't hurt. I'm glad to hear Hikki has helped you be a bit more comfortable with yourself and accept rather than refute.

Bowie is awesome. Kinda off topic but what is your favorite album? Mine's gotta be "Heroes"! Blackout, Moss Garden, and Secret Life of Arabia FTW! :D

I would be in the category of "troubled." lol. I am actually a Christian, and am very strong with my faith. It was definitely hard being 2 things that supposedly cannot go with each other, but as the Beatles would say..."I have to admit, it's getting better!" lol

Yeah, I'm one of those unfortunate enough to have lost their family when I came out, although I came out as transgendered first then queer second. Basically, the only blood relatives I have that I can talk to are my mother and brothers. But right now I have the family I chose and they mean a heck of a lot more to me than those that rejected me.

I love that media figures, whether or not they're LGBT themselves, are able to come out as allied and in support of those of us who are. Judging from the lyrics to "On and On", it doesn't surprise me that Hikki's friendly to "family". May deity bless those that do come out as such.

Which reminds me that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt never married as a form of supporting same-sex marriage. Now, I wouldn't want to get married myself, but to say such a thing and follow through on it... there are very few people like that in this day and age.

So thank you to Hikki for being one of those brave media figures who supports us! The more the merrier!

Interesting! I visit AfterEllen quite often but not AfterElton. Could someone explain to me how the lyrics in FYI is linked to homophobia? I don't really get it even though it's my favorite track from TitO. Now I feel dumb.

not the lyrics. the movie it was originated from. the movie "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" deals with homophobia.
