Ayumi's popularity seems to be waning considerably in Japan over the last 2-3 years.
Check out these sales numbers from each artists' previous releases:

Ayu
2009: Next Level 377,872
Utada

Namie
2008: Best Fiction 1,538,290
Aiko
2008: Himitsu 460,569

Even Aiko is outselling Ayu.
I wonder why the sudden decline in sales for Ayu.

Glad to hear that. I think she did pretty well and many of her fans still appreciate and treasure her music. 2nd place is really good considering the fact that the first in place is a band.

Ayumi is not on the list? I'm surprised, lol.

Arashi worked hard for their position this year. Utada on the other hand... well, releasing remixes, old songs and album in language most japanese don't understand works good for her:P


A lot of people as saying how surprized they are that Arashi isn't number 1 seeing as how they always top the charts. Even their new single made it to number 1 last week, so I've gotta say I'm surprized as well. But I'm glad Utada placed as well as she did considering she didn't do much Japanese work this year.

YAY! My two favorite artists placed in the top 5, Utada at number 2, and Arashi at number 4! I think both are incredibly amazing and deserve it 100%!

She's a legend.
I think a lot of people will continue to listen to her old stuff even if she comes out with the new.
It never gets old.

She did release one single "9 Sai no Omoide". I don't know if that counts because they were songs she sang when she was a little girl.
