Precious - doesn'tshow her talent too much, but I'm impressed she was able to do album at that age.
First love - I don't like most of songs. She couldn't pick singles better, "Automatic", "First Love" and "Movin' on Without You" are really the best.
Distance - Hikki has improved her style, nice album with pop/rock songs.
Deep River - experimental, seems like she finally wrote songs in the way she wanted too
Exodus - well, some songs are perfect (Kremlin Dusk, Animato), but some are awful.
Ultra Blue - beautiful ballads mixed with more up-beat songs (This is Love, Keep Tryin'). Still experimental, but not as much as Deep River.
Heart Station - the most emotional album, and the most personal, I guess.
This is the One - Utada tries to go mainstream. A way different from her japanese work, however, it's still better than lots of dance music we can hear on the radio or tv.

I describe her albums as... mellow and soft yet vibrant and tough, fast yet slow, heart warming yet heart breaking, something that gives the feeling of falling in love yet it also gives something about falling out of love, being truly happy yet sad at the same time, making you cry yet making you smile as well... in other words "being human"

1. First Love = groundbreaking album from a New-York born Jgirl
2. Distance = a more mature First love
3. DEEP RIVER = Revolution in Jpop - Day 1
4. Exodus = Ups and downs, nice effort, a few gems
5. ULTRA BLUE = sophisticated in a good way, her second best
6. HEART STATION = golden hits in there
7. This Is The One = Merry Xmas Mr Lawrence
8. Single Collection Vol. 2 (disc 2) = showed us love, thanks

I will keep this short!!!

First Love: Unforgettable. Groundbreaking Japanese R&B.
Distance: Pop at its best!
Deep River: Her Magnum Opus. Undoubtedly.
Exodus: Alternative!
Ultra Blue: 2 words: Ethereal, and Passion.
Heart Station: Contemporary Music at its best!
This is the One: Crying like a child.
Single Collection Vol.2: I bought the limted eidtion direct from Japan shipped to Singapore. Awesomeness.

I already posted mine before (but I forgot where it is). I described Hikki's image on each album (based on her lyrics theme, life perfomance, photo shoots, etc). But I excluded the Precious album because I don't listen to it that much.

1. First Love = New Yorker that trying to be Japanese
2. Distance = pop teenager
3. DEEP RIVER = magical
4. Exodus = sexy
5. ULTRA BLUE = Simple casual girl, sometimes exotic
6. HEART STATION = Egocentric
7. This Is The One = more woman side of her
8. Single Collection Vol. 2 (disc 2) = matured woman

I'd describe her music as really ambient, actually.

I don't really get that mainstream feel from Ultra Blue. It's quite a 'magical' album. Most songs from UB transports me to somewhere else. It's like I can really close my eyes and her music enables me to vividly picture myself somewhere else faraway.

Speaking of pop-rock, I'd really like to see her doing more pop-rock or just rock kinda music. Haha. Her Placebo cover was pretty good!

As for me I'd describe her albums as 'personal' or 'intimate'. This is how I feel whenever I listen her albums. The music and the lyrics, the overall mood or theme that she sets for the songs are all very 'authentic'. It's like I could connect to the music on a very deep level.

When people label Utada as J-POP, I like to give them weird looks. I know that the best genre to fit her into is J-POP but this label itself does injustice to her. Like what has been said so many times before, her music is experimental and she doesn't really stick to one genre alone so sometime it really infuriates me.

Each of Hikki's album has a certain identity to it, like each one is a different person. They clearly show how she has grown as a person and as a musician.

And please don't put her on just one genre. She's the kind of artist who likes to experiment. She jumps from one genre to another, not sticking on just one. That's why I love her. That's why we love her.

She always bring something new. Not something that other artists have already chewed. (About me. LOL)
