erm.....i think there is a nice way that i used to remember Hiragana & Katakana when i just learn it...I practice it on a paper..then i start writing...diary using it..now i am quite well on those...^^ Yea...and if you learn mandarin before...there is certainly advantage when you learn japanese. I going thru this by experience mandarin do help to learn...and learn thru lyrics....quite helpful also...but the problem with it is some words in the lyrics..u cant even get in dictionary...I learn most of my new words from the class i attend..and hikki's song..lolx

umm... im not sure if you guys already have this cause its too confusing reading all that. but here are classroom objects in romanj.

paper - kami
book - hon
pencil - enpitsu
glue - nori (like seeweed)
scissors - hasami
ruler - monosashi
chair - isu
desk - tsukue
pencil case - penkeesu
pen - pen

The thing about learning Japanese is really just memorization, IMHO. If you know Chinese you can (kind of) breeze through the kanji, since you only need to know the pronunciations.

The hiragana and katakana are pure memorization though. (-__-) There's no good way around it, as far as I know.

The grammar is all about application. If you write like, a little diary in JP or something, then it'll get better. And when you've learned something new, try to use it. It's easier to remember that way.

And one last thing. If you want to pick up on vocabulary, find a JP song. Get the lyrics. Try to find out what every word means, and try to pull out your own translation. If you like the song, not only is it fun, but educational in the long run too!!
