Many of you speak as though there is still hope for TITO - I believe that it was well over before it begun. Hikaru probably made this album to fulfill her contract, and IDJ probably wanted the contract to be fulfilled. It is likely that IDJ has given up on Utada. She is obviously well - she went to Hawaii, and can sing - having that Kareoke party. So why aren't the Best Buy (etc) promotions resuming? Because someone has given up. Either Utada feels crushed by dissapointment for the second time - or IDJ feels as though her promo thus far is not making any headway. I doubt that we will hear anything significant concerning TITO aside from spins of This One from hereonin.
In any case, many of you speak as though Island could have done a better job at promoting her as a new artist. I'm unfamiliar with how things work - but I do agree that the promotions really seem lacking. However, I feel as though I need to pose this question:
If time were reversed, and you were in charge of her promo team in IDJ: what would you do differently?
Because there still is hope for it. TITO was released physically here in May. Artists like Adele, Kings of Leon, Lady Gaga even Utada's lablemate The Airborne Toxic Event released their albums last year. Utada is not going to become a huge star here in the U.S. overnight or in a month. I agree IDJ and U3 are taking their sweet time giving us some news but I wouldn't be so fast to say TITO's dead in the water when This One has already garnered 51 spins and it hasn't been offically released yet. It may not seem that big but for a song by an unknown singer that hasn't been offically released already recieving spins is good. And CBTM managed to break into the Top 40 Rhythmic.
I can't help but wonder (I'm not saying your one of them) if there are some Utada fans who have hoped for the failure of TITO since day 1.
I hoped for it to be good at least.I didn't have high expectation of sells but when I saw the cover I said "This is doomed".I then figured that we can get an alternate cover actually. But nope,I was so wrong. The album is not getting enough coverage to have people care.It won't take a month....but we had 3.IDJ doesn't need to have the artist campaigning for themselves if they do actually use some solid promotional efforts. They could even plug Utada for the NBC Toyota Concert Series.Distribute some billboards.Do what we've been saying since before the album was released,a collaboration with some else on the label. You got Kanye,Rihanna and even Fall out Boy at your disposal. The album was never gonna get promoted, and the best they did of it was that "Utada album now $5 dollars at AMAZON!!!" notice at the official site.
